There is simply no way to succeed and not using tools, to make your work a little bit easier.

Reporting and Analysis

Raventools

The tool we strongly recommend for reporting to your clients is Raventools. At first look the tool looks really basic, but it will allow you to import all links you have created, monitor them for changes, analyze brand mention, track ranking and also analyzing your website for new keywords. In addition to that you can easily create different user levels and automate reporting for your clients.

SEO Powersuite

SEO-Power-Suite-Enterprise-Edition-2011

If you are really passionate about website data and you want to track the rankings of your website in real time (or approximately), you definitely have to take a look at the SEO powersuite. It contains 4 really useful applications which you install on your computer. The one I use most is Rank Tracker and it allows you to track yours and your competitor rankings in every search engine you like.  In addition to that you can also use the Link Assistant to find really good link prospects and contact them for links or develop blog relationships.

The other tools contained in the SEO Powesuite are the SEO Spyglass and the Website Auditor. With the first one you will be able to create a competition analysis for your realy competitors in the SERPs. With the Website Auditor, you will be able to analyze your website and see if it matches the onsite SEO best practices.

Microsoft Excel

There is no doubt that Excel is the most useful tool for every online marketer. It allows you to do so many things with your data, so that you can easily see every metric you want. Recently, I discovered something even cooler – Excel SEO Tools. Those allow you to quickly analyze all of your URLs and get data for them such as tweets, facebook shares/likes, google plus ones and much much more. You can download this great toolset from Niels Bosma’s Website. In addition to that there is a complete excel SEO guide available here.

MajesticSEO

The bets backlink explorer tool available today is without doubt Majestic SEO. The index gets updated daily and you can easily see  how many links exactly you have to your website and review them sorted by days or months. This tool have its own custom metric AC rank, which serves as a marker how good you are doing in your linkbuilding efforts, keep in mind that the maximum AC rank is 15.

The main advantage of Majestic over all other backlink analysis tools is that you automate the link reporting and see how you are doing every day. In addition to that, you can customize all reports and send them to your clients too.

Open Site Explorer

I know that Open Site Explorer is once again a backlink analysis tool and it doesn’t get updated very often. However, it gives you the ability to analyze the anchortext other websites are using to link back to yours. However, keep in mind taht all the data from OSE actually represents 20-30% of all links you actually have on your website. For best results combine it majestic.
